Elizabeth M. Hacker

Elizabeth was the fifth child born to Johann Hacker and his first wife, Elizabeth Lueth. Elizabeth was born 21 Jan 1866 in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan even though her death certificate states erroneously that she was born in New York.

On 3 Oct 1888, Elizabeth married Charles F. Herr, son of Samuel Herr & Margaret McElhing, in Detroit, Michigan. Charles was born 17 July 1863 in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio. There were no children from their union.

In 1900, according to the US federal census, Charles & Elizabeth lived in Toledo, Lucas Co., Ohio. Charles's occupation was that of a yardmaster's clerk.

"Lizzie" died at 6:30 AM on 6 June 1900 in Toledo, just two days after the 1900 census was taken. She died from Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Elizabeth was the first of her full-blood siblings to die. She was only 34 years old. The family members in Detroit and Toledo assembled at Cherles Herr's home in Toledo for her funeral on June 7th. Elizabeth was a beloved sister. After having dinner, Elizabeth's brother's John and Ben sat by her side all through the night. The next day, the family assembled again to accompany her body on the train to Columbus, Ohio for burial. She was buried in Greenlawn cemetery at 4 PM on the 8th of June. Charles Herr had many family members buried in Greenlawn and must have felt comfortable placing Lizzie there among them.

Charles carried on without Elizabeth but he never remarried. I have not located his 1910 census page yet but on his 1920 census page he lived with Elizabeth's half-sister, Martha (Hacker) LaVerne and her family in Detroit. At that time, Charles was employed as an auto company laborer. It's possible that he may have worked with Martha's husband, Andrew LaVerne.

On his 1930 census page, Charles was living as a "roomer" with an unrelated family in Detroit and was employed as an accountant for an auto company.

Charles died on 13 Oct 1933 and was buried along side his wife in Greenlawn cemetery in Columbus, Ohio.
