Emil Carl was the third child born to Johann Hacker and his second wife, Hulda Schemke. He was born 5 Oct 1879 in Washington Twp., Lucas Co., Ohio.
1880 US Federal census (ED 52) shows Emil living with his parents in Washington Twp., Ohio. He is just 9 months old. Two errors mar his entry: Emil is showing a "Michigan" birthplace and the enumerator spelled his name "Amer".
1900 US Federal census shows (ED 117) Emil still living with his parents in Washington Twp. He is age 20, single and has no occupation listed. He states he was born in Ohio.
1910 US Federal census (ED 159) shows no real changes. Emil is still living with his parents in Washington Twp. He is now age 30 , still single and is the driver of an ice wagon. He states he was born in Ohio.
On 1 Oct 1913, Emil married Elva J. Auten, daughter of George W. & Laura Auten. Elva was born in March of 1883 in Michigan according to her census pages. She was a widow with two young children (ages about 5 & 7) when she married Emil. Her former husband, Ernest Sweeney, had died on 6 Jan 1913. Elva married Emil in October of that same year. Sadly, Elva died before the 1920 census was taken, leaving Emil with her children. Her actual death date is not known at this time. Her name does not appear in the Ohio Death Index for 1908-1932. More research is needed.
On 12 Sept 1918, Emil completed his WW1 draft card registration in Toledo, Ohio. This card confirms his birthdate as 5 Oct 1879. Unfortunately for us, this style of card (unlike the style used on 5 June 1917) does not ask the persons marital status so we have no idea if Elva was alive on this date or not. Emil listed his mother Hulda as his nearest relative. Some may consider that an indication that he was widowed. Emil stated he was self-employed cutting wood and his physical description was listed as "meduim height, stout build, blue eyes and brown hair". He had no deformities. On his 1930 census page, Emil stated that he was not a veteran so I think we can assume he did not go off to war.
1920 US Federal census (ED 101) shows Emil at age 40, living in ward 8 of Toledo, Ohio. He is head of the household and a widow. His father had died in 1918 and now his mother Hulda lives with Emil in his rented house. His "Sweeney" step-children, Nina and Clare, are also in his household. They are now ages 13 & 14. Emil states that he cannot read and that his occupation is that of a landscaper for a gasoline infirmary. Again, he states he was born in Ohio.
1930 US Federal census (ED 82) shows Emil at age 50, residing in Ward 11 of Toledo, Ohio but not in his own house. He is living with his sister Hulda (wife of Olin Gilbert) and her family. Emil's mother had died in 1927 and both of his step-children had married. Emil still states that he is a widow and that he is employed as a landscaper / gardener.
1939: Emil Carl Hacker died on 21 Feb 1939 in the home of his step-daughter, Mrs. Nina (Ralph) Holey, in Trilby, Ohio. Her name is a little unclear in the newspaper obituary. Emil was 59 years old when he died. He was buried in Collingwood cemetery. I walked the entire cemetery but did not find his headstone. If anyone has a photo of it, I would love to have a copy. Of course, there is always the possibility that his grave is unmarked.
