Emma L. Hacker

Emma was the sixth and final child born to Johann Hacker and his second wife, Hulda Schemke. She was born 16 Sept 1885 in Washington Twp., Lucas Co., Ohio. I am not sure what her middle initial stands for yet.

According to the 1900 census (ED 117), Emma was living in her parents home in Washington Twp., Stark Co., Ohio. She was 12 years old.

On 6 Nov 1909, Emma Hacker married Bernard Henry Bettinger in Toledo, Lucas Co., Ohio. Bernard was the son of Peter Bettinger & Caroline Kramer. He was born 11 Jan 1880 in Spencer Twp., Lucas Co., Ohio. They became the parents of three (3) children:

1. Bernard W. Bettinger (1910-1988)

Married: Esther M. Newby

Children: Oneta (married Mr. Stanley) and Paul (married Dorothea).

2. Harold Olin Bettinger (1912-1994)

Married: unknown.

Children: unknown.

3. Boyd Hacker Bettinger (1914-1978)

Married: Agnes Mae Donnelly

Children: two, names unknown.

According to the 1910 census (ED 19), taken shortly after their marriage, Emma and Bernard settled in Adams Twp., Lucas Co., Ohio. No children were born to them when this census was taken in May. Their first child would be born later that year (Nov). Bernard was age 28, had the occupation of a paper company wagon driver and he owned his house. Emma was age 22. They both stated that it was their first marriage.

On 12 Sept 1918, Bernard completed his WW1 draft registration card. It can be found under the name "Barney Henry Bettinger". This card verified his birthdate as 11 Jan 1880. At this time, he was age 38, lived now in the city of Toledo and was employed as a truck driver for Consolidated Mfg. Co. Bernard names his wife (Mrs. Emma Bettinger) as his nearest relative.

According to the 1920 census (ED 110), the family continued to live in Toledo. Bernard Sr, was now age 39, owned his residence and was employed as a house painter. Emma was age 32 with no occupation. Their three sons live with them: Bernard (9), Harold (7) and Boyd (5).

According to the 1930 census (ED 105), the family still resided in Toledo. Bernard Sr owns his residence and is a "painter of private homes". Emma is now 42. Their three sons still lived with them: Bernard W. (19) was single and was employed as a wallpaper cleaner, Harold O. (17) was a laborer in a tire shop and Boyd (15) was a grocery store salesman.

Emma (Hacker) Bettinger died 14 Sept 1953 in Toledo, Lucas Co., Ohio. She is buried in the Toledo Memorial Park. A death date for her husband Bernard is unknown at this time.

I am currently working on a multi-generation migration project and would like to include all descendants of Emma's children. If you are a descendant and wish to be included, have any information on this family or want additional information, please contact me by email !!
