The Family of John Jacob Hacker

Hulda was the fourth child born to Johann Hacker and his second wife, Hulda Schemke. She was born 5 Feb 1882 in Washington Twp., Lucas Co., Ohio.

1900 US Federal census shows Hulda living in the home of her parents in Washington Twp., Lucas Co., Ohio (ED 117). She is 18 years old and single. Her occupation is listed as Housekeeper. Her birthdate is verified on this census page as Feb 1882.

On 16 June 1904 in Toledo, Ohio, Hulda married Olin Lee Gilbert, son of Albert Demas Gilbert & Sevilla Jane Heckert. Olin was born 16 Sept 1882 in Canaan Twp. (Crestline), Wayne Co., Ohio. They became the parents of 6 children:

1. Leila B. Gilbert (1904-1923)
2. Olin A. Gilbert (1906-1912)
3. Orlean B. Gilbert (1906-1989)
 Married a "Mr. Walterschied"
4. Burton J. Gilbert (1908-1912)
5. Kenneth L. Gilbert (1912-1980)
6. Curtis W. Gilbert (1920-1998)

1910 US Federal census shows the family living in Toledo, Ohio (ED 46). Hulda is now 28 years old and the first four of her children have been born. Leila is age 5, the twins (?) Orlean and Olin are both age 3 and Burton is just age 2 on this census. Hulda's husband Olin was a furniture finisher by trade and they lived in a rented house.

On 12 Sept 1918, Olin Lee Gilbert completed his WW1 draft registration card in Toledo. He was 35 years old. This card verifies his birthdate as 16 Sept 1882 and it gives his physical description as "medium height, slender build, brown eyes and brown hair". He had no deformities. He was employed as a woodworker at that time and he named his wife "Hulda Carrie Gilbert" as his nearest relative.

1920 US Federal census shows the family still residing in Toledo, Ohio (ED 101) but sons Olin and Burton have died. By this time, the house hold consists of Hulda (36), Olin (36), Leila (15), Orlean (13) and Kenneth (7). Olin is now working as a gate factory wood worker.

1930 US Federal census shows the family continuing to live in Toledo, Ohio (ED 82). Olin is now 47 years old and owns his own furniture repair business. Hulda is now 48. Daughter Orlean is age 23 and single. She works as an auto factory assembler. Son Kenneth is 17 and works as a furniture upholsterer possbily for his father. Son Curtis is 9 and he attends school.

Olin Lee Gilbert died on 7 June 1961 in Toledo. He is buried in Collingwood cemetery.

Hulda L. Carrie (Hacker) Gilbert died a year later on 11 June 1962. She is also buried in Collingwood cemetery.

Other members of this family buried at Collingwood cemetery are: Leila B., Olin A. and Burton J. Gilbert.
