The Family of John Jacob Hacker

Ida was the second child born to Johann Hacker and his second wife, Hulda Schemke. She was born 14 Sept 1877 in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan. 

Ida was baptized in St. Luke's Lutheran church in Detroit, Michigan on 30 Sept 1877. Her handwritten baptism record may explain her lengthy name of Ida Albertine Marie Mathilde Hacker. Her baptism sponsors were: Albert Kofs (or Koss), Marie Karschner (sic) and Mathilde Becker. Surely, it's not just a coincidence that she was given all of their first names.

Somewhere between her baptism in 1877 and the birth of her brother Emil in 1879, her family moved from Detroit down to Washington Twp., Lucas Co., Ohio. Ida was the last of our original immigrant's children to be born in Detroit. On her 1880 US Federal census page, Ida is age three (3) and living with her parents in Washington Twp. This is the only federal census glimpse we get for Ida Hacker unless we discover one day that Detroit's 1890 census survived the fire that supposedly destroyed it and of course, that census would have had to have been taken before her death on 29 Mar 1890.

On 29 March 1890, Ida Hacker died from Diphtheria. She was 12 years old. She was buried in Collingwood cemetery which was within walking distance of their home on Sylvania Ave. Her tombstone is fourth in the row of family headstones at the cemetery: her mother Hulda is first, then her father John, third is her brother Wilhelm (who reportedly died the same day as Ida) and then Ida herself. Her headstone is made of a sandstone material which is very weather worn. In fact, I noticed in Sept 2007 that there were no letters left to read on it at all. I assumed that it was Ida's stone because it matches Wilhelm's stone somewhat. The only difference in the two stones is the shape. One looks male (Wilhelms) and one looks female. They died at the same time, from the same disease and the stones are made of the same material, it would make sense for it to be Ida's stone.
