The Family of John Jacob Hacker

John was the first child born to Johann Hacker and his first wife, Elizabeth Lueth. John was born 28 Jun 1857 in Erie Co., New York in either West Seneca or the township of Buffalo itself. He was the first "American" Hacker on our Hacker line. Documents found for John reflect a Buffalo birthplace but the 1860 census shows he was living in West Seneca at the age of three. According to the journals kept by John himself, they moved into the city of Buffalo about 1861 making John's actual birthplace a coin-toss to researchers.

John lived in the Buffalo "area" of New York from birth until age 7 ½ when the family moved to Detroit. John spent the rest of his life in Detroit where he left behind a large business legacy when he died 22 Jun 1942.

John Hacker married Mary Louise Machris, daughter of Charles Machris and Theresa Huber on 13 Jan 1877 in Detroit, Michigan. She was born 9 Sep 1857 in Detroit and died 23 Jan 1936. Like John, Mary Louise was a child of immigrant parents. They are buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery in Detroit.

John and Mary would become the parents of eleven children:

Married Ethel D. Gitschlag.
Children: Arthur Louis Jr., Charles Frederick.

5. Walter August Hacker (1886-1959)
Married Mae Eiden.

6. Charles Gustave Hacker (1889-1943)
Married Helen Baum.
Children: Virginia Maude, Julia Bernice.

7. Gertrude Theresa Hacker (1891-1982)
Married Harry C. Waller
Children: Ruth Eleanor, Robert Eugene.

8. Clara Augusta Martha Hacker (1894-1983)
Married Clarence Alfred Bowerman.
Children: Betty Elsa May.

9. Frederick Henry Hacker (1896-1947)
Married Constance Bennett.
Children: Kenneth.

10. George Charles Hacker (1898-1960)

11. Lillian Bertha Hacker (1901-1992)
Married Ralph Edward Gamble.
